The Weekly Devotion

Ephesians 2:1-5 (New International Version)
1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved.

"Coming Alive"

It is the funniest thing. I have 2 dogs that are only a year apart. One is a beagle and the other a delightful mutt. They are both females and companions. On many a lazy day, I will come outside to discover them both lying around in the grass or on the patio. As soon as they realize that I am going to remain outside for awhile they spring to life. They begin sparring and playing with each other. My family calls this mode of display gladiator dogs. Although their tails are wagging, their teeth are barred in mock battle readiness. They snarl and bark and chase each other around. As soon as I go back in the house they stop. There is something about my presence or the presence of other family. They wait until they have an audience before they perform. They evidently need motivation and truly enjoy having people around.

In Ephesians, Paul reminds us that we, too, can be "Made Alive." We can be made alive in Christ. Christ is the motivation that causes us to spring to life! With Christ in our lives, we have more energy and more motivation to "perform"; serve God. We were once like dead dogs in our sin; bogged down and separated from God. "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ..." (Ephesians 4) I, too, "perform" better when God is present in my life. Today, add a spring to your step as you ask God to be present in your life. Allow God to energy your day with his love and mercy.
