The Weekly Devotion
Psalm 51:10-12 (New International Version)

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

"Action Against 'Ugliness'"
We need the Fall. We need to have a picture etched in our minds of the bright colored leaves on big full trees. We need to remember the brilliance of the sun shining through the red and yellow hues creating an explosion of color that stands like an exploding firework frozen in time. We need to remember the sound of leaves under foot as we walk through the park. We need to capture the squirrels in motion gathering their acorns for the winter ahead.

We need to remember all of these things so we can endure the days when the leaves are gone, the colors are gray, and squirrels are hibernating. It is important to have solid memories and pictures of the beauty around us when the beauty fades and the apparent ugliness comes. There is a lot of ugliness in our world that puts us in the gray. The ugliness of abuse, dysfunction and injustice to name a few. God wants us to have his love and grace etched in our minds and hearts when we face the ugliness of our world. God desires us to remember so that we will be driven to action against the ugliness of hunger, homelessness and disease.

The psalmist prays to God to create a new heart in him/her and to restore the joy of salvation. He wants to remember the "Fall" with all its colors long after the leaves have fallen. God will always grant us a renewed spirit when we turn to God so that we can remember...the love, the grace, the beauty, the color. Today, find something beautiful and etch it into your memory. It will come in handy this winter. May it lead you to action against the ugliness.
