The Weekly Devotion

Ephesians 2:1-5 (New International Version)
1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved.

"Coming Alive"

It is the funniest thing. I have 2 dogs that are only a year apart. One is a beagle and the other a delightful mutt. They are both females and companions. On many a lazy day, I will come outside to discover them both lying around in the grass or on the patio. As soon as they realize that I am going to remain outside for awhile they spring to life. They begin sparring and playing with each other. My family calls this mode of display gladiator dogs. Although their tails are wagging, their teeth are barred in mock battle readiness. They snarl and bark and chase each other around. As soon as I go back in the house they stop. There is something about my presence or the presence of other family. They wait until they have an audience before they perform. They evidently need motivation and truly enjoy having people around.

In Ephesians, Paul reminds us that we, too, can be "Made Alive." We can be made alive in Christ. Christ is the motivation that causes us to spring to life! With Christ in our lives, we have more energy and more motivation to "perform"; serve God. We were once like dead dogs in our sin; bogged down and separated from God. "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ..." (Ephesians 4) I, too, "perform" better when God is present in my life. Today, add a spring to your step as you ask God to be present in your life. Allow God to energy your day with his love and mercy.

Be Glad in It

Psalm 118:24 (New International Version)

24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

"Be Glad in It"
Monday was the last day of Summer. I remember this because it almost always falls on my nephew, Jeff's, birthday September 21st. Although many may lament the end of the out-of -school season, it is only because of its ending that a new season begins. One of the tell tale signs of the beginning of fall are the Mums. These beautiful and hardy flowers come in all colors and create an incredible contrast of color against a graying autumn sky. As soon as they begin to emerge, they conjure up feelings and memories within me of bonfires, football, colorful leaves, a chill in the breeze, pumpkin carving, apple pie baking and wearing sweatshirts. The sight of a simple flowers does all of that. It brings joy to a new season and the reality that not only this season but every day is gift from God. As the Psalmist puts it so well, "This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.

We have a choice every day and every season to rejoice in it or be consumed by it. To rejoice in the day is to grab everything that each day has to offer. It is to wake up expectant of what God will do in the next 24hours. It is to claim the day for God knowing that God will deliver. Each day we have a choice. Today, I invite you to embrace the day and rejoice in it knowing it is God's and so are you.

Organized Chaos

Pastor's Weekly Devotion
SEPTEMBER 16, 2009

Rev. Craig Duke
Rev. Craig Duke

The Weekly Devotion
Genesis 1:1-5 (New International Version)

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 Now the earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day.

"ORGANIZED CHAOS"
There's lots of noise. There are hundreds of conversations taking place simultaneously. Some are person to person others are on cell phones. There is laughter and screaming as conversations erupt with emotion as teenagers share information about those around them, their girlfriends and boyfriends. "Thump, thump, thump, thump, pound, pound, pound, pound" goes the rapid succession of footsteps up and down the metal steps on the bleachers. It is so loud that it drowns out the lesser sounds around it. "Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all for Princeton stand up and holler," and they do...the crowd that is. Some of the crowd, that is, hollers in response to the beckoning cheerleaders. The band begins warming up and a scale is heard as they pump air into the brass and woodwind instruments. Students are milling around the fence that separates them from the main action on the field. Food stands are making and selling snow cones , soft drinks and candy bars. This cacophony of voices and chaos of sounds suddenly stops as all at once the crowd becomes one as they cheer and clap as their team crosses the goal line with the football. It soon becomes a roar!! Now all the voices are one and it is a stronger and clearer voice then before!! Now, everyone knows that something great has happened and all pause to see it. Out of the chaos comes order.

When God created the heavens and the earth, he took the chaotic void and made it into something beautiful and purposeful. Out of chaos comes order.

The church is the body of Christ. It is made up of people from every walk of life. Our interests are diverse as are our gifts and experiences. We are different colors, different dialects, and different genders. We may appear to have nothing in common and yet, when it comes to God we are one voice. God is our main event and together we "cheer" every time God crosses the "goal line" with his love and compassion for others. Our diversity is our strength and love is our roar. We seek to bring order to the chaos of the world around us. Today, if your life seems full of chaos take heart knowing that out of chaos God always brings order.

More Workers

Matthew 9:37 (New International Version)

"More Workers"
Every 3 years my family and I have a nice treat. A parade comes right in front of our house. We don't have to drive anywhere, we just pick up our lawn chairs and carry them out the front door and place them in the grass next to the street. After a few minutes we hear the sirens of multiple fire engines announcing the beginning of the annual Labor Day Parade. The first year we saw it, we were so surprised to see how long it was! It goes for 90 minutes.

This year as in years past the street is filled with people walking. Who are they? They are the laborers. The United Mine Workers, Steel Workers, Electricians, Carpenters, Pipe Fitters, Boiler Makers and many more. These men and women work in the blue collar trenches. On this parade day they proudly display their trade on bright colored T-shirts as they pass out candy. Semi trucks drive by, large tractors and trailers, it is not fancy but it speaks volumes of the hard working people of our community. I love the parade because of what it stands for; hard work and sweat that makes a difference.

Jesus needs these folks. The laborers, I mean. In Matthew he makes it clear that God has provided all the folks we could ever hope for to share God's love with each day. And yet, there are not enough laborers to share the good news. How cool it would be to have a parade of Christ following laborers who were as proud of their work for God as these union folks were on Labor Day. Labor Day reminds all Christ followers of the labor that still needs to be done. Jesus needs hard work and sweat to share His love. Today, be a laborer for God. Extend God's love and message to those with whom you work.

Friends

The Weekly Devotion
John 15:15-17 (New International Version)

15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other.

"FRIENDS"
This lunch date was way over due. We have know each other for 10 years and yet this was the first time that we made a date to have lunch together. I look to this man as a unsung hero in many ways. He served his country well in world war II. He began working a farm at age 11, for a neighbor 3 miles away. He was paid $1.00 a day. He also walked the 3 miles to work. He then went into retail where he spent most of his working life. He also ran a gas station for a time. He was the only one who could take care of the boiler in the old church building and seemed to always know where things were. He can repair anything. He has helped me build a fence in my back yard, repaired my dishwasher, washing machine, garbage disposal, water pipes, front porch cement and strengthened the braces that hold up the porch roof. Every Sunday he is at church before I arrive to prepare the worship center, turn on lights, place water glasses by the chairs and in the office of all participants, takes up the offering and attendance for Sunday school, gets the greeters and follows up on the ushers. We have shed tears over the death of his grandson and laughed at ourselves. The most remarkable thing he does for me every Sunday before I walk to the pulpit is to say, "the Lord bless you, preacher." He also tells me that he loves me. It is very humbling. He also takes my robe after the first service and hangs it up so I can immediately begin to shake hands. I have learned from this man who loves Jesus, loves the church and loves me. I thank God for him. At age 93, Bob Mckee is a special friend. Today, make a date for that long overdue lunch. It is so worth it to be with a friend.
